Speaker:

I am Ellen Pogemiller.

2

:

I'm Ellyn Hefner.

3

:

And today we are launching our

podcast between two Ellens.

4

:

Um, and really the goal of our

podcast and when Ellen and I have had

5

:

conversations over the last couple

of months is that there are so many

6

:

policies and topics and community ideas.

7

:

Um, that we hear about as legislators,

but we don't get the opportunity to dig in

8

:

deep and learn more about what's happening

in our community and how these policies

9

:

would positively or possibly negatively

impact the communities we serve.

10

:

That's part of it.

11

:

Our, because our job, we talk about

the bill, but sometimes we don't hear

12

:

about how the bill in its effects.

13

:

And so we've done a couple

of episodes already.

14

:

Um, we've done, um, a couple of

them are, we talk about Right to

15

:

Work and we've talked about, uh,

suicide and domestic violence.

16

:

So you can see all of those.

17

:

But there might be some, we'll

probably get a film, um, I

18

:

guess this is a video podcast.

19

:

"Vodcast", vodcast . And we'll do that

on Fridays and even during session,

20

:

we may have to do an emergency, um,

between two Ellens, like today, today.

21

:

So we're gonna switch gears

just a little bit, I think.

22

:

A conversation that we've been having

a lot, um, with our constituents

23

:

between legislators is, um, having to

do with the, um, government shutdown

24

:

and most immediately right now, um,

SNAP benefits, um, which will on

25

:

November 1st, tomorrow, um, not renew

for the over 600,000 Oklahomans in

26

:

our state that depend on Snap and we

get calls from our constituents or the

27

:

people in the state, even people that

know me that aren't my constituents.

28

:

Have talked to me about it.

29

:

And so we hear a lot of conversation about

what's happening, happening federally,

30

:

but there are some things that we can

do in our state, in our positions,

31

:

and that's more of what we would like

to talk about today, maybe, right?

32

:

So we know that Snap is a one to

nines, uh, versus a food bank.

33

:

So we've had a lot of conversations

of having food drives and trying to

34

:

provide immediate food to those in need.

35

:

Um, but what we haven't really

discussed is that, um, snap.

36

:

Covers nine times the amount

of food that a food pantry,

37

:

emergency food pantry can provide.

38

:

And so, um, I know you've had more

conversations, Ellen, about as a

39

:

state what kind of resources that

we could provide that may be, uh,

40

:

provide additional resources to

community members that are impacted.

41

:

Yeah.

42

:

And and it's also too, if we're focusing

on this one piece, which it's big,

43

:

you know, the, um, we need consistent.

44

:

Uh, food.

45

:

You know, that's, that's

something that we need.

46

:

So, but there's a lot of other things

that may, we might be taking away from by

47

:

putting all of our efforts towards this.

48

:

And so that's gonna

create another big hole.

49

:

And, um, it seems like we can get

together a little bit, um, as a

50

:

state, I have heard, um, and we'll

maybe talk about a little bit about

51

:

special session, maybe what we can do.

52

:

The governor has talked about being

a neighbor, which I think is great,

53

:

but I don't believe that's good.

54

:

If, with all that influx of money.

55

:

That goes into our grocery stores

and, um, people can get all over

56

:

the state instead of having to go

someplace to pick up food that maybe

57

:

doesn't serve or it's, it's difficult.

58

:

Um, so we, we could talk a little

bit about special session, but,

59

:

um, I think that there are some

things that we probably could

60

:

do that we're not looking at.

61

:

Yeah.

62

:

So I, I, I mean, I think we are calling

for a special session and calling for an

63

:

opportunity for leadership to get in a

room and decide what funds are available,

64

:

um, how those funds can be spent.

65

:

Um, we know there's furloughed employees,

but at the state and federal level,

66

:

we know about childcare subsidies,

we know about healthcare clips.

67

:

There's a lot happening right now.

68

:

Um, and I think as a state we

have an obligation to meet and

69

:

discuss and help support those

impacted, um, by the shutdown.

70

:

I also like how this relates

to our podcast too, is.

71

:

It, it seems that people have

this idea that we all have to be

72

:

together on something for it to work.

73

:

And, and I think that the discussion

that we should be having right now is

74

:

maybe some of those pain points that

I don't wanna talk about, or maybe

75

:

someone, um, in a different party or

someone that feels differently has, but

76

:

that's the only way that we're gonna

take this from just maybe solving a

77

:

couple of weeks to how we can look into

how we can help each other months ahead.

78

:

So, um, those kind of things

I, I think that are being

79

:

left outta the conversation.

80

:

Is, um, getting us all together, even

if you don't like their, what they're

81

:

going to say or maybe their opinion.

82

:

But we, I do learn something

from things that I don't know.

83

:

And, um, earlier talking to a friend, we

talked about maybe some partnerships that

84

:

might not be likely partnerships that

are happening because to solve a problem

85

:

we've gotta look at the problem first.

86

:

Instead of looking about what we

want to do or, um, maybe what other

87

:

people think that we should be doing.

88

:

So we are excited, um,

to launch the podcast.

89

:

We hope that you'll join us.

90

:

We hope that you'll email us.

91

:

You'll go to our website and your

feedback will definitely help drive

92

:

the conversations we have between two.

93

:

ellens.com

94

:

is the website, and we

do have an Instagram.

95

:

But we would love, uh, your questions

as well, what we end with, which we

96

:

don't have a question to end this

little podcast with, but we always

97

:

ask our guests to ask us a question.

98

:

Maybe I should ask you a question, but,

um, hopefully you guys will send in

99

:

some questions too to ask 1, 2, 3, 4.
